Mussar (Character Development) Group

The CKA Mussar Group is in its second year of ongoing exploration of ethical character development through text study and confidential discussion

Torah'n'Tefillah

Every Shabbat morning (except when we have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah - 10-14 times a year), we hold T 'n T, an informal and interactive worship service and Torah study. We are focusing on Midrash during the Summer of 2010.

Coming Adult Education Courses  

Adult Education upcoming for 2010-2011:

It is time to start planning your Jewish education for the coming fall. Consider taking these upcoming CKA Adult Education classes:

Interfaith Iftar: 7:30PM, August 26. Join members of the Muslim and Christian community for a traditional sunset break-the-fast for the Muslim holiday of Ramadan. Enhance understanding between faiths over food and felowship. RSVP with Christen.

Havdalah Selichot Program: 7:00PM, Sept. 4. We will follow Havdalah with Selichot prayers and a showing of Trailers Shmailers, a documentary on how movie trailers reveal Hollywood's perception of Jews.

Jew U: Sunday mornings 11-11:45AM, starting with Religious School. This year we will be learning everything from God to nuts. Programs scheduled include "Islam and Judaism, Past, Present, and Future," "An Intellectual Excavation of the Land: Israel in Memory, History, and Current Events." Come to one session, or come to them all. Jew U is ideal for anyone who who loves learning. Open attendance.

Introduction to Judaism: Sunday evenings 7-8:30PM, starting Oct. 3rd. Refresh your Jewish knowlege or learn something new! This 13-session course explores the fundamental teachings and institutions of Judaism, and the seminal experiences of the Jewish people. Open to all, this course is a pre-requisite for anyone considering conversion to Judaism. Books and materials will be provided. $100 for CKA members, $150 for non-members.

Beyond the Torah - The Greatest Teachings of the Prophets and Sages of Ancient Israel: Tuesday evenings, 7 -8:15PM. Come explore the spiritual and intellectual treasures of the Hebrew Scriptures. Selected texts from the Historial, Major, and Minor Prophets, and the Writings will take you beyond the weekly Torah readings. Prepare to be surprised by what's in the most popular book in history. 8 Sessions, beginning Sept. 21st, running through Nov. 9th. $75 for CKA members, $100 for non-members.

Hebrew Refresher: For adults who have forgotten (or never learned) the Hebrew alef-bet and want to start their journey toward greater Hebrew literacy (Saturday mornings, 8:45-9:45AM, beginning Oct. 9).

Dallas Community Learning Fest: CKA supports and participates in the Greater Dallas Community Learning Fest, being held this year Feb. 23-30 at locations around the Dallas Area. Go to http://www.jccdallas.org/ to learn more about the classes being offered.

Philosophy 4900 - Kabbalah: Jewish Mysticism, Myth, and Magic. This course, offered at the University of North Texas in Denton, will provide a historical overview of Jewish mystical and esoteric traditions. Through the reading of texts in translation, we will exploring the ideological, phenomenological, and social aspects of Kabbalah. (Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Spring 2011 semester at UNT). How to audit a class at UNT:

Individuals over 65 are permitted to audit courses at Texas state universities free of charge. Non-traditional students wishing to audit the class can enroll by filling out a Audit Form. UNT Audit forms are available through Rabbi Geoff.

Rabbi Geoff will refer the student to the academic department offering the class to determine space availability and request permission. If approved, the department will provide the individual with the necessary signatures. The form should then be taken to Student Accounting in the Eagle Student Services Center to complete the payment process.
